THOMAS HOPPE, pianist and collaborative artist

"Bios and Resumes are wonderful - you read about all the fantastic things the artists have done already, prizes they have won, competition successes, amassing fame and fortune. But nobody has ever read a single word about all the mishaps! How many failures, competition rounds not passed, entrance exams bombed? How many disappointments? How many fine musicians work two or three other jobs besides their performing activities, in order to make ends meet? Nothing of that sort is ever published, nothing about the pains and disasters while travelling around the world´s airports and train stations, in tourist class of course - who can afford 1st class tickets? Sometimes i have to think that people really don´t want to hear anything about that sort of thing. It is much more comfortable to read only about the wonderful things and admire a fairytale performer, the prettier the better. For this reason i will at some point soon write a "NEGATIVE BIO", filled with my musical business failures collected throughout many years of learning music, loving music and performing music."

Thomas Hoppe, summer of 2011
